Fire destroyed about 80 cars in roro carrier
On May 1, 2013, at 8 pm. a fire broke out aboard it the "Atlantic Cartier" at the O'swald-Quay in the Hansa-Port of Hamburg.
About 70-80 new cars which were bound for the USA had caught fire in a hold.
The fire rescue tried to access the fire over the stern ramp of the roro ship.
Several fire engines, two fireboats and several more untits were mombilized to the ship, also the volunteer fire departments Harburg, Kirchdorf, Wilhelmsburg, Warwisch and Eissendorf attended.
The fight against the fire lasted all night long using water, foam and CO2 and was still going on in the morning of May 2. Extreme heat was complicating the work as well as the need to keep the ship on even keel.
The hull was cooled from outside with the water cannons of the fireboats. The fire rescue was assisted by the three tugs "RT Zoe", "Hunte" and "Bugsier 9" as well as three launches of the water police. Containers which were stored on the upper deck were removed with cranes.Vessel's DetailsShip Type: Ro-ro/container carrier
