Ferry stuck in ice in Cabot Strait
In the afternoon of Mar 18, 2015, the "Blue Puttees" got stuck in ice off Cape Breton with about 40 people on board, on its way to North Sydney.
The Canadian Coast Guard deployed the icebreaker "Louis St. Laurent" on Mar 19 to free that vessel, but the weather conditions deteriorated and they had to suspend operations because of visibility.
The efforts were resumed in the morning of Mar 19. Passengers on the "Blue Puttees" were receiving free meals while they wait to be freed.
The "Highlanders" and the "Atlantic Vision" remained at the dock in North Sydney, having loaded traffic, but still waiting for weather conditions to improve in the Cabot Strait.
The Coast Guard said this was some of the worse ice conditions they've seen in thirty years. When ferry service resumes the ships will be operating on a load-and-go basis.
