FEDEX is partnering with self-driving car startup Aurora Innovation Inc in a pilot project in Texas that uses their startup technology in a self-driving Paccar Inc truck, reports Bloomberg.
The vehicles will carry many loads per week for fedex between Dallas and Houston, marking FedEx's first effort toward autonomous vehicles.
The trucks will make the 500-mile round trips along the Interstate Highway 45 corridor.
'We believe we launch quicker, scale faster, and ultimately provide a better product when done in partnership with industry leaders like FedEx, like Paccar, than we would if we did it alone,' said Aurora CEO Sterling Anderson.
'I believe that trucking will be the first to scale meaningfully.' said Mr Anderson.
Aurora plans to launch a full commercial trucking business in late 2023. The startup also is working on autonomous technology for use in passenger vehicles that can be operated in fleets of robo-taxis.
