THE US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) proposed standards for air pollution from freight trucks and buses beginning with the model year 2027, reports the American Journal of Transportation.
Meanwhile, the Biden administration announced investments and tools it would use to accelerate zero-emitting vehicle deployment.
'Heavy-duty vehicles like freight trucks, delivery vans, transit buses, and school buses are a significant source of both climate pollution and deadly diesel pollution,' said Clean Air Strategies associated vice president Peter Zalzal.
'Today's epa proposal and the administration's planned actions and investments are an important start, but they do not yet ensure levels of zero-emission vehicle deployment that are feasible and needed,' said Mr Zalzal.
'Rapid deployment of zero-emission vehicles will protect the health of all Americans, help address the climate crisis. We look forward to working with EPA to rapidly deploy zero-emitting solutions.'
Medium and heavy-duty vehicles are ten per cent of all the vehicles but are responsible for a quarter of climate pollution and half of the smog-forming pollution from the transportation sector.
A report from race-car maker Roush Industries declared that 2027 zero-emitting vehicles will have lower up-front costs and lower total cost of ownership.
