DP World signs MoU to develop container terminal at Kaohsiung
GLOBAL container terminal operator DP World has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the state-run Taiwan International Ports Corporation (TIPC) for the development of Kaohsiung Port's Terminal 7.
The agreement marks the beginning of a joint effort to seek future business opportunities and steer growth in Taiwan's port infrastructure, while enhancing the country's trade potential by establishing seamless cargo movement across its supply chain, according to a company statement.
"Our strategy is developing in strategic locations where our customers want us to be, serving global trade and able to handle ultra large vessels," said DP World CEO Ahmed Bin Sulayem.
"Our flagship Jebel Ali is among the most advanced and productive ports in the world - it is a testament to the power of visionary leadership," he said.
Kaohsiung Port's Terminal 7 is a continuous development project of five berths and a container yard, with a total area 147.5 hectares intended to generate a designed capacity of 4.5 million TEU per annum.
DP World will bring to the table its international expertise and experience of over four decades spanning a portfolio of 77 inland and marine terminals and handling more than 170,000 TEU a day.
Said DP World vice president Rashid Abdulla: "Kaohsiung has the capacity to serve immediate growth in Taiwan but does not yet have the capability to attract new growth. This MoU marks the intention to tackle this challenge."
