DAMEN Shipyards and French shipping giant CMA CGM will retrofit 100 CMA CGM vessels to make them 10 per cent more fuel efficient, the shipyard claims.
The upgrades will be carried out at damen Shiprepair Dunkerque (DSDu) and Damen Shiprepair Amsterdam (DSAm), both of which boast some of Europe's largest dry docks and extensive experience in complex refits and retrofits.
The focus of this collaboration will be the installation of bulbous bows. Previously, CMA CGM utilised shipyards in China and occasionally the Middle East for such modifications.
Still, this agreement marks their first time utilising European yards for these complex enhancements.
This year, nine stops by CMA CGM vessels are planned-five at DSDu and four at DSAm.
Three of these stops will involve installing bow bulbs, starting with the innovative LNG-fuelled container feeder ship Arctic.
The 120-tonne bulb, fabricated at DSAm, will soon be fitted on this vessel.
The remaining two vessels to receive bulb installations are the 366-metre Arctic and the 170-metre Aurora.
While bulb retrofits will achieve five to 10 per cent of fuel savings, CMA CGM is exploring additional upgrades to enhance vessel efficiency.
