Crew saved after freighter "Coastal Pride" sank off Daman
The "Coastal Pride" with a crew of 14 on board and a cargo of cement suffered mechanical failure while caught in a storm on June 22, 2015. The ship emergency anchored about 15 miles off Dahanu, north of Mumbai, where it sank on June 24. Around 6 a.m. the ship developed a list due to gusting winds and bad weather.
When the Indian Navy arrived to the scene, the vessel was capsized and mostly submerged and the crew was drifting in the water 24 miles south of the Daman coast.
The Navy had deployed a Sea King helicopter at 07.58 a.m. from INS Shikra, Colaba, and the Coastguard two Chetak helicopters at 8.40 a.m.
The Sea King saved six people, the Chetaks the remainder.
The crew was taken to Umar Gaon in Gujarat. The ship had sunk at 8.45 a.m.
