Cosco Pacific February volumes fall 3.5pc overall to 4.9 million TEU
COSCO port operator Cosco Pacific suffered a 3.5 per cent drop in throughput in February to 4.9 million TEU year on year, widening January's 0.7 per cent decline.
Overseas operations did best, growing 8.2 per cent with Piraeus growing 22 per cent and Singapore up 12 per cent. But its Suez Canal Container Terminal fell 13 per cent and Antwerp Gateway terminal was down 11 per cent.
Yangtze River Delta ports were worst hit, falling in 10.3 per cent in February to 667,500 TEU with Pearl River Delta down 13.4 per cent to 1.2 million TEU.
Cosco Pacific's Hong Kong Cosco-HIT Terminal fell 33 per cent in February year on year while and Asia Container Terminals' throughput dropped 31 per cent.
In the Yangtze River Delta Ningbo Yuan Dong Terminals was the worst performer, with throughput falling 31 per cent, just slightly better than the 33 per cent drop the month before.
Best showing occurred in the Bohai Rim ports which saw 1.1 per cent growth, though falling from the 3.7 per cent gain made in January. Tianjin Five Continents International Container Terminal plunged 38 per cent to 121,300 TEU in February.
The only bright spots were at the Southeast Coast ports which grew 2.5 per cent after falling nine per cent in January. However, these ports are among Cosco Pacific's newest and start from very low bases. They handled just 276,100 TEU as a whole.
