Container imports via US west coast regains lost ground from rival east coast
THE Pacific Maritime Association reports that laden boxes crossing US west coast docks in May fell 1.5 per cent, while exports fell 2.6 per cent with total of laden boxes falling 1.9 per cent year on year.
Since March, when the west coast port's market share of laden imports fell to 45 per cent of the US total, the coast's share had been rising, reaching 51.9 per cent in May, according to IHS Media.
Meanwhile, the US east coast's market share of laden imports hit a high in March of 47.8 per cent, but has since declined to 41.7 per cent in May. Gulf coast's market share of laden imports fell from March to May from 6.3 to 5.5 per cent.
The volume of laden imports into all east coast ports dropped by two per cent year over year in May to 755,404 TEU, while laden imports into west coast ports increased by two per cent to 939,858 TEU, according to PIERS data. Laden import traffic at Gulf ports fell by 13 per cent year over year to 100,023 TEU.
