THE first piling for the construction of a new quay in Johan Frisohaven at the port of Rotterdam was driven for the UWT container centre, the terminal operator said.
The quay will have a length of 165 metres and an initial depth of seven metres and eventually it will be dredged to 10 metres. UWT will use the quay to replace one of the current berths in the 1st Eemhaven.
The construction of the quay is expected to be completed by the end of September.
The quay will mainly handle empty boxes, although, it is also suitable for full containers. UWT is also designed to accommodate the increasing modal shift from truck to inland shipping.
According to forecasts, 40 per cent of all empty container movements will in future be made via inland shipping.
The construction of the quay forms part of a total restructuring of the terminal, which was given a new central entrance for trucks.
In addition, truckers can now drive directly to the exact location to pick up containers, with the aid of the correct pre-arrival notifications. The terminal aims to cut the average length of stay for trucks on Bunschotenweg by half.
