Confusion: SCFI A-E rate up 5.6pc while Drewry's WCI soars 99pc
SPOT rates for shipping containers from Asia to Northern Europe jumped 5.6 per cent to US$761 per TEU last week, according to the Shanghai Containerised Freight Index (SCFI).
But rates on the World Container Index (WCI) soared 99 per cent last week to record highs not seen since January, reported Lloyd's Loading List.
The Asia-Mediterranean component of the SCFI rate decreased 3.2 per cent to US$889 per TEU, reported IHS Media.
The WCI rate had the Shanghai-Rotterdam spot rate up 99 per cent. Supported by high load factors at the start of the peak season on the Asia-Europe trade, the June 1 rate increases, pushed up the Drewry-assessed WCI Shanghai-Rotterdam spot rate index by $841 or 99% to $1,689 per FEU this week.
This is the highest weekly level since January 14 this year when it came to $1,854.
May rate hikes prompted the WCI rate to soar 158.6 per cent to $1,376 and it had shed just over 40 per cent after that before June rate increases were implemented.
