CMA CGM in the market for six more 16,000-TEUers on Chinese charter
THE French shipping group CMA CGM is said to be planning to add six more 16,000-TEU vessels in addition to the three it already has in service.
CMA CGM has already reached agreement with South Korean builder Samsung on an order for three 16,000-TEU vessels to be delivered in 2015, and that order is understood to be based on a past order placed jointly with German owner Claus-Peter Offen. but never activated, according to London's Fairplay.
It has now been updated, and the three vessels concerned have been upsized. In addition, CMA CGM's CEO Rodolphe Saade said the group is seeking three more 16,000 TEU ships to take the number of such vessels it will have in service to nine.
CMA CGM told Fairplay that it was not immediately able to comment on the report, but Mr Saade indicated these would not be owned by CMA CGM, but rather taken on charter from a Chinese partner and talks are underway with a Chinese yard.
