Chongqing container capacity to be raised by 500,000 TEU this year
CHONGQING plans to spend CNY3.2 billion (US$513.69 million) on waterway infrastructures this year and raised its port capacity by 500,000 TEU in terms of container and six million tonnes in terms of tonnage.
The city's waterway cargo traffic is estimated to hit 140 million tonnes. Its port throughput is predicted to reach one million TEU for containers and 135 million tonnes for tonnage.
Last year, port of Chongqing recorded a container handling volume of 795,000 TEU, 16.3 per cent more than in 2011. Its throughput tonnage grew 7.7 per cent to 125 million tonnes. Foreign trade cargo accounted for 4.09 million tonnes, up 16.9 per cent, said Xinhua.
