CHINESE YARDS GET GREEK SHIP REPAIR BIDS
Chinese shipyards are the preferred destination for Greek ship owners whose vessels need maintenance and repairs, according to a recent report.
But intense competition for repair contracts among the world’s shipyards has helped hold down costs for ship owners, according to an Aug. 7 report in the Hellenic Shipping News.
In addition to Chinese yards, facilities in Singapore, Turkey and a soon-to-open shipyard in Brazil are jockeying for maintenance business while offering potential customers “massive discounts,” the report said.
Repair contracts with Chinese yards now vastly outnumber those with Greek shipyards, which lost business in past years mainly due to worker-management disputes.
Popular destinations for Greek vessels include the Fujian Huadong yard in southern China, the Zhoushan Xinya shipyard on the coast south of Shanghai, and the Shanhaiguan facility in Qinhuangdao east of Beijing.
