GLOBAL Port Tracker, which monitors container volume at major ports, has predicted that north Europe will not have a peak season this year because Chinese growth is slowing.
Port Tracker's North Europe Trade Outlook report expects European laden container imports in 2013 to increase 3.9 per cent year on year, and says this growth will be fuelled by southern Europe.
Laden container imports to north Europe in 2013 are expected to decline 8.9 per cent year on year to 12.2 million TEU while European exports are expected to increase by 4.1 per cent to 17.7 million TEU, representing an overall decline of 2.3 per cent to 10.6 million TEU.
"Trade prospects are not improving, despite a few short-term hopeful signs. We do not share the optimistic views being expressed in the market," said the report. "The north European market remains on a downward slope with little prospect for growth."
Although north Europe as whole is expected to struggle in 2013, the north range ports - Le Havre, Zeebrugge, Antwerp, Rotterdam, Bremerhaven and Hamburg - are expected to see import volumes, including empty and transshipments, increase 0.1 per cent to 16 million TEU with exports up 1.5 per cent to 17.6 million TEU.
Le Havre is expected to be the best performing of the north range ports with volumes anticipated to increase 10 per cent in 2013.
