China Boat Disaster: Wreck pulled upright - 97 bodies recovered
Four days after the sinking of the "Dong Fang Zhi Xing" the wreck was pulled upright by two 500-ton-sheerlegs starting on June 4. The operation lasted two hours. Two smaller cranes were remaining on standby. Before, hooks had been welded by 50 divers onto the ship and a net stretched around the entire structure, another net was laid out a little bit downstream.
The top-deck cabins with smashed blue roofs were jutting out of the river on June 5. The water had to be drained from the hull, and part of it was still submerged. The weather was sunny following drizzle and winds that hampered the operation for most of the week. Actually 97 bodies have been recovered. From the wreck oil spilt out during the salvage operation which needed to be removed. Access to the accident site was blocked by police and paramilitary troops stationed along the Yangtze embankment.
