Cargo ship sinks after collision with OOCL Southampton off Hong Kong
THE 8,063-TEU OOCL Southampton was in collision with a small cargo ship off Hong Kong in which all 12 crewmen were rescued unharmed by nearby vessels though the smaller Hang Sheng 18 sank, reported shipwrecklog.com.
OOCL is investigating. The accident occurred in the dark in the early hours of Tuesday morning as OOCL Southampton was leaving Shenzhen's Yantian terminal.
The 323-metre long OOCL Southampton collided with the 98-metre Hang Sheng 18. An oil sheen was spotted over where the freighter sank, said Ship Wreck Log.
The OOCL Southampton proceeded to a nearby anchorage. A report by a Lloyd's agent said Hang Sheng 18 sank "with oil pollution", although OOCL said there was no mention of an oil spill in its reports on the accident.
