The 'Ivan Papanin' was breached in the Antarctic in heavy ice around Feb 6, 2018, near the Indian Antarctic ice station Bharati, with ensuing water ingress. On board were about 100 people, including scientists and crew. According to the ship’s owner, the Murmansk Shipping Company, all people remained on board after the ship had contacted an underwater obstruction, but managed to reach an ice pier, where the water ingress was localized and brought under control. There was no danger to ship, crew and scientists on board.
