HARBOUR trucking rates in southern California ports could rise 50 per cent because of the slowness of negotiations between International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) says Robert Curry, president of the California Cartage Company.
"Owner-operators simply cannot make a living based on the current level of turn times picking up and delivering containers. The congestion problem has made the older rates uneconomical and the truckers can no longer make a living," he said.
"I think you can expect to see harbour trucking rates go up as high as 100 per cent and at least as much as 50 per cent from current levels," he said, reported the American Journal of Transportation.
Freight forwarders say increases are already in effect. A northern California freight forwarder told AJOT that his harbour trucking rates from the Port of Oakland have risen 50 per cent and a southern California freight forwarder reports that a US$300 trucking rate from the Port of Long Beach has now increased to $450, a 50 per cent hike.
