The "Amber L" was a suspect in a hit and run accident off Cochin on June 11, 2017.The vessel collided with the fishing boat "Carmel Matha" around 2 a.m. 12 miles off the coast of Cochin.The cargo vessel switched off lights and sailed away after the collision.The impact of the collision was so severe that the boat overturned and split into two, before sinking .Meanwhile, the cargo vessel fled the scene, allegedly ignoring the pleas to rescue the fishermen adrift. Anthony Raj from Tamil Nadu, and Rahul Das and Moti Das from Assam did not survive. While two of the bodies have been recovered, the rescue team is still searching for the third. The 11 injured were rescued by fishermen in another boat. They have been admitted to various hospitals in Kochi and the condition of two of them was stated to be serious.The bulkcarrier was the main suspect by the Indian Coastguard.She was en route from Eliat to Cochin. The "Amber L"’s AIS track shows a slight curve on the approach to Cochin where she dropped anchor at 3.47 a.m. with scratches at the bow. While the captain was a Greek, the security guards were Indians and the rest of the crew is from Philippines, Qatar etc.The American Coast Guard had taken the ship ninto custody in Portland on February 23, after finding out that the ship had a defective navigation control.This was due to the fact that the ship had a problem with its vessel control.They had also issued a ban on entering American waters without correcting this mistake.Meanwhile the police was examining the voice data and logbook retrieved from the ship.
