LAST year the Black Sea container terminals of Ukraine, Romania, Russia, Georgia and Bulgaria handled a total of 2,610,623 TEU, including empty containers, but excluding transshipments.
Full containers accounted for 1,854,623 TEU of the total volume handled, representing a decrease of 0.56 per cent year on year.
Within this total Ukraine handled 552,284 TEU after box volume fell 13 per cent compared to the previous year; Russia 475,679 TEU (+3.3 per cent); Romania 415,743 TEU (+9.1 per cent); Georgia 255,958 TEU (+13.4 per cent); Bulgaria 154,959 TEU (+8.8 per cent).
During this period, 58.5 per cent of full containers handled were imported, with 41.5 per cent of the volume being exported. It is estimated that 71 per cent of the containers were full and the remainder empties, according to data provided by Informall.
Export volumes from the aforementioned countries increased by 7.85 per cent relative to 2013. The highest export growth was achieved by Georgia at 32 per cent and Russia at 16 per cent.
Imports to the region decreased by four per cent mainly because of a 24.4 per cent decline in Ukraine's import volume.
