MACANDREWS, once an independent player since the 1770s and now a subsidiary of Marseilles-based CMA CGM, has been recognised for its drive to encourage a switch of cargo from trucks to short sea shipping, reports the UK's Handy Shipping Guide.
MacAndrews has been named a finalist at the British International Freight Association (BIFA) awards because of its environmental credentials. It is now expanding its container services having added a direct call to London's Tilbury on the existing Polish service with the intention to add the port to its Gothenburg run, said the report.
MacAndrews said extra services are needed to supplement to the current schedule for its 60-hour transit time from Tilbury and Hull and to maintain two sailings a week from Poland to the UK, which would bring more shippers to switch from trucks.
MacAndrews still maintains its strong links with the Iberian peninsular with services to and from Irish, Scottish and Dutch ports as well as various English centres and the latest move will enable the consolidation of cargo from Poland to the UK and develop and expand Tilbury as a transshipment hub for Spanish and Portuguese traffic.
With the company fleet now exceeding 9,000 TEU, many in the 45-foot high cube pallet wide bracket, the company is confident that it can build on its traditional roots which include five Spanish offices mainly trading on the regional staples of fresh and frozen produce.
