The "Balmoral" arrived at El Musel on board on Feb 6, 2017, after she was forced to seek refuge in Gijón adue to the bad sea conditions off Finisterre while enroute from Southampton to Funchal, on the Portuguese island of Madeira. The ship had on board 1,093 passengers, the majority British, and 529 crew. Once it was announced that the ship had to be diverted to El Musel, those responsible for Gijón Turismo decided to send a shuttle bus service connecting El Musel to the center of Gijón. The unexpected arrival of the ship had consequences in the commercial operation of the port, since the Belgian bulk carrier "Mineral Ningbo", having come from Port Cartier with 150,000 tonnes of iron ore for Arcelor, that had planned to dock in port instead had to remain anchored in the outer area.
