WHILE container freight rates on the trade lanes ended the year lower than in 2013, the average on three of the four big trade routes was higher than in the previous year, reports Lloyd's List.
Last week's Shanghai Containerised Freight Index rate from China to northern Europe last week declined by US$64 on the week before to $1,085 per TEU. This time last year, rates on the trade were also higher than the current level, standing at $1,511 per TEU.
Shanghai-Mediterranean rates fell $62 last week to $1,241 per TEU. At the end of 2013, prices on this trade lane stood at $1,570 per TEU.
Transpacific rates also declined last week from the previous week, but were still ahead year on year.
On the Shanghai-north Europe trade, the average for this year US$1,323 per TEU against $1,138 in 2013.
To the Mediterranean, the average for the year was $1,505 per TEU compared with $1,185 per TEU last year.
And to the US east coast, prices for 2014 averaged $3,515 per FEU against $3,326 per FEU in 2013.
West coast port congestion and labour unrest resulted in the average rate for the year declining to $1,977 per FEU against a 2013 average of $2,095 per FEU.
