ASIA-Europe container volumes posted an eight per cent year-on-year third quarter increase to 3.7 million TEU, according to Container Trades Statistics data.
The third quarter increase follows 2.7 per cent year-on-year growth in the second quarter and a 1.2 per cent decrease in the first quarter.
In the first nine months of the year, volumes increased 3.4 per cent over the first three quarters of 2012 to 10.6 million TEU, falling just short of 2011 volumes when carriers handled 10.7 million TEU on that trade.
Asia to north Europe volumes were up 1.8 per cent to 6.8 million TEU from January to September compared with last year and are slightly ahead of the first three quarters of 2011, reports Lloyd's List.
In the third quarter of 2013 the Asia to north Europe trades handled 2.4 million TEU, an increase of 6.5 per cent year on year.
The trade between Asia and eastern Mediterranean experienced the highest growth during the first nine months of the year with volume increasing 10.8 per cent over 2012's result to 1.9 million TEU. Compared to the first nine months of 2011 volumes on this trade lane are 4.5 per cent higher.
Third quarter volumes on the trade lane rose by 14.9 per cent compared to the third quarter the previous year to 648,909 TEU.
Volumes from Asia to the western Mediterranean during the first nine months of 2013 are up 3.6 per cent year on year, but 14.4 per cent lower than in 2011.
