Vladivostok Port Chief Vasili Burda has ordered the removal of the Karatayevo wreck due to environmental risks in Novik Bay.
According to the Russian maritime agency PortNews, the Port Director of Vladivostok, Vasili Burda, signed the decision regarding the removal of the Karatayevo from the port area on November 3. The obligation was assigned to the shipowner Soyuz Rybakov company. The wreck is located in front of Pier No. 10 of the Podnojye settlement on Russki Island.
PortNews indicated that the basis for the decision was the assessment dated October 26 from the Far Eastern unit of the Russian environmental oversight agency Rosprirodnadzor. The agency concluded that the wreck posed a risk of harming the marine environment in Novik Bay, which opens to the Sea of Japan.
The Primorye Transport Prosecutor's Office announced on October 19 that petroleum products were observed on the water surface near the Podnojye pier. In the initial assessment, the Karatayevo was indicated as a possible source. The prosecutor's office also began to investigate the conditions under which the fishing vessel was being held at the pier.
