A GIANT trucking and logistics company that had a contract with the US Postal Service (USPS) has abruptly shut, reports the London Daily Mail. Midwest Transport, headquartered in Robinson, Illinois, told more than 650 employees, including 480 drivers, that it is shutting down operations.

MTI, which was founded in 1980, operated key terminals in Illinois, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Florida, according to its website.

An MTI driver, who spoke to FreightWaves, said the news came out of the blue.

'I don't know what happened because we had a lot of postal contracts all over the US,' he told New York's FreightWaves. 'I [don't know if] the USPS is just finding out like us [that] the mail will be sitting on the docks on Monday.'

Trucking companies are the latest to be face financial problems - following a spate of bankruptcies and closures across retailers and restaurants.
