The U.S. Navy will not escort ships in the Strait of Hormuz but will provide support amid rising tensions with Iran.
According to Axios, the U.S. Navy will not directly escort commercial vessels stranded in the Strait of Hormuz. The details of the 'Freedom Project' proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump, aimed at addressing the significant decrease in shipping traffic in the region due to U.S./Israel-Iran tensions, are becoming clearer.
According to statements made to Axios by two U.S. officials, the plan does not include the U.S. Navy directly accompanying commercial vessels. One of the officials indicated that the Navy would be positioned 'near' the vessels to provide deterrence against potential threats originating from Iran.
The same sources stated that the U.S. Navy would provide information on the safest navigation routes that commercial vessels could take in the Strait of Hormuz. In this context, it was noted that routes that have not been mined by Iran would be particularly highlighted.
Due to increasing geopolitical tensions and security risks in the region, a significant decline in shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz has been observed recently.
