The US backs the Philippines after a clash with China, where water cannons injured fishermen and damaged boats in the South China Sea.

The United States has expressed its support for the Philippines following an incident in the South China Sea, where Chinese coast guard vessels fired water cannons at Filipino fishing boats. This confrontation resulted in injuries to three fishermen and damage to two boats, as reported by Newsweek.

The Philippine coast guard stated that the incident took place at the Escoda Shoal, also known as Sabina Shoal, where Filipino fishing boats were operating lawfully. Officials described the water cannon blasts as high-pressure attacks that endangered the crews aboard the vessels.

In response, Beijing accused the Philippine vessels of engaging in provocative acts near the atoll, which China refers to as Xianbin Jiao. Chinese authorities claimed their actions were necessary control measures to drive the boats away, asserting that their actions were lawful.

China has long asserted sweeping sovereignty over the South China Sea based on historical rights, a stance that was dismissed by the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague in 2016. The Philippines, a treaty ally of the United States, contests these claims.

In light of the escalating tensions, Manila has initiated joint patrols with American and partner forces to counter what Washington perceives as Beijing's attempts to alter the status quo through a heavy naval and coast guard presence in the disputed waters.

Philippine coast guard spokesman Commodore Jay Tarriela released footage showing Chinese vessels targeting 20 fishing boats with water cannons and executing blocking maneuvers. He accused the Chinese vessels of cutting anchor lines, labeling it a brazen escalation of hostilities.

In response to the incident, two multirole response vessels were deployed to support fishermen near Escoda Shoal, located in the West Philippine Sea, which is Manila's term for its exclusive economic zone extending 230 miles from the coast.

Chinese coast guard spokesman Liu Dejun reiterated China's claim of indisputable sovereignty over the Spratly Islands, including Xianbin Jiao, stating that Philippine boats were operating near the atoll under the pretense of fishing.

US State Department deputy spokesman Tommy Pigott stated, "We stand with our Philippine allies as they confront China's provocative actions and increasingly dangerous tactics against its neighbors, which undermine regional stability."
