The US claims China is stealing AI technology from US labs, risking diplomatic relations ahead of an upcoming summit, according to a White House memo.
The US has accused China of stealing US artificial intelligence labs' intellectual property on an industrial scale, reported Reuters.
A memo released by the White House warned that the announcement could strain relations ahead of a summit between US and Chinese leaders next month. Michael Kratsios, director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, wrote that foreign entities, principally based in China, were engaged in deliberate campaigns to distill US frontier AI systems.
He stated that tens of thousands of proxy accounts were being used to evade detection, with jailbreaking techniques deployed to expose proprietary information. These coordinated campaigns, he added, systematically extract capabilities from American AI models, exploiting US expertise and innovation.
