Transport Minister Uraloğlu discusses Turkey's transport agenda, regional tensions, and the status of 14 ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu met with media representatives at an iftar program, making critical statements regarding Turkey's transportation, digitalization, and aviation agenda. Touching on various topics from regional tensions to 5G technology, Uraloğlu particularly highlighted the situation of Turkish vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.
Regional Tension and Air Traffic
Minister Uraloğlu stated that they had taken precautions against the recent developments in the region, expressing that flights to Iran were reduced before tensions escalated. He announced that currently, flights to Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria have been halted, while flights to Gulf countries are being evaluated daily and canceled if necessary.
Regarding Turkish-owned vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, Uraloğlu said, 'We have passed one of our 15 ships with permission. The other 14 ships are currently on standby, but there are no security issues. We are in constant contact with Iranian authorities.'
15-Year Age Limit for Social Media on the Way
Speaking about the proposed legislation aimed at children's digital safety, Uraloğlu mentioned that a 15-year age limit for social media usage is on the agenda. He stated that they are examining models from different countries, saying, 'We want our children to focus on their studies instead of wasting time on platforms. Our public opinion research shows that there is 80% support for this regulation.'
April 1 as a Milestone in Technology and Airport Move
Uraloğlu announced the date for Turkey's 5G journey, stating that the first signal will be received on April 1. He noted that out of the current 95 million mobile phones, 32 million are 5G compatible, and mentioned that they are also ramping up in aviation. With the completion of Yozgat and Bayburt-Gümüşhane airports, the total number of airports will rise to 60. Additionally, it was reported that Etimesgut Airport will be ready for the NATO Summit in June.
'Operating Rights' Formula for Highways and Bridges
Clarifying the claims regarding privatization, Uraloğlu emphasized that selling the roads is not on the agenda. He pointed out that heavy maintenance costs burden the budget, stating, 'We are considering granting operating rights for certain periods to transfer maintenance costs and generate revenue for the public. No decision has been made yet; valuation studies are ongoing.'
