US President Donald Trump's plan to sign the first instalment of a trade accord with Chinese President Xi Jinping was thrown into doubt after Chile cancelled an upcoming summit where the two leaders planned to meet, reports Bloomberg. The cancellation by Chile came as social unrest continued to rock Santiago, and appeared to catch the White House off guard. But the administration insisted that it would continue to press to finalise the 'phase one' agreement in coming weeks.

It wasn't clear whether US officials would be able to find an alternate venue for a meeting with President Xi. Organisers off the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit indicated they had no plans to hold the event elsewhere.
