Trump cites tanker release as a sign of legitimacy, delaying attacks on Iran's energy infrastructure amid ongoing negotiations.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced that a step considered a 'sign of legitimacy' in the ongoing contacts with Iran is the release of oil tankers from the Strait of Hormuz. Trump stated that the negotiations are progressing with the 'right people' and once again postponed planned attacks on Iran's energy infrastructure.
Power plants were the target.
Trump had previously indicated that they would target power plants in Iran, asserting that if the Strait of Hormuz remained closed, they could 'turn off the lights' with a single move. The initial deadline set for Monday was postponed by five days due to progress in the negotiations.
In a statement made on social media on the night of March 26, Trump said that the negotiations were 'going quite well' and announced that the attacks had been paused again. The new deadline was set for April 6 at 8:00 PM (Eastern Time).
Conflicting messages draw attention.
The statements regarding progress in the negotiations coincide with conflicting messages coming from Iran. While some Iranian officials reject the possibility of negotiations, other sources indicate that counter-offers are on the agenda.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced that they would examine a 15-point plan conveyed through Pakistan, which is said to belong to the U.S.
Negotiation channels are unclear.
While Trump did not clearly state who the U.S. is negotiating with, some signs indicate that Araghchi has emerged as a key figure. On the other hand, it is claimed that the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, is also among those contacted.
Following Israel's announcement of killing commanders of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Navy, unverified information has emerged suggesting that Pakistan requested Araghchi to be removed from the target list and that efforts are being made to keep channels open for possible negotiations with Ghalibaf.
