RMK Marine begins construction of MIARAKA, the first sailing container ship, promoting sustainable maritime transport in collaboration with Windcoop.
Turkey's leading shipbuilding company, RMK Marine, held a steel cutting ceremony for the MIARAKA, the world's first sailing container ship. This innovative project is a collaboration with France-based Windcoop and Zephyr & Boree, taking place at RMK's shipyard in Tuzla. The MIARAKA symbolizes the beginning of a new era in sustainable maritime transportation.
The vessel will measure 91.3 meters in length and feature three sails covering an area of 1,050 m², designed to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 60% compared to traditional fossil fuel usage. With a cargo capacity of 2,500 tons (210 TEU), the ship will also be equipped with 40 refrigerated container plugs for cold chain transportation. Scheduled for delivery in the second quarter of 2027, the vessel will accommodate a crew of 10 to 12 people and host up to 12 passengers.
RMK Marine has previously taken pioneering steps in sustainable maritime transportation with its sailing Ro-Ro ship project. This new initiative for Windcoop reaffirms the company's commitment to environmentally friendly solutions and significantly contributes to global efforts aimed at reducing the maritime industry's carbon footprint.
During the ceremony, attended by senior executives from Windcoop, RMK Marine CEO Dr. Utku Alanç stated: “Maritime transportation is the backbone of global trade and an indispensable part of global logistics. Therefore, developing innovative solutions to reduce the environmental impacts of the industry is of great importance. This project we have implemented with Windcoop is a critical step on this path of transformation. We are proud to be one of the pioneers of this change.”
