Rederiet MH Simonsen orders two polar-class tankers from Ada Shipyard to enhance fleet capabilities in northern waters.
Danish tanker company Rederiet MH Simonsen has placed an order for two polar-class tankers at Ada Shipyard as part of its fleet renewal program.
It has been reported that the vessels to be constructed will feature a diesel-electric propulsion system, with each having a carrying capacity of approximately 3,500 dwt. The new tankers will be designed to operate in challenging marine conditions close to the poles, providing the company with greater flexibility in its operations in northern waters.
Founded in 1931, this family-owned company operates more than 10 tankers with capacities ranging from 2,000 dwt to 7,000 dwt. The company’s fleet primarily operates in the small tanker market in Europe, transporting vegetable oils, solid fats, molasses, ethanol, and fertilizer products.
Some vessels in the fleet occasionally operate in Arctic waters. Notably, the Orasila tanker and, periodically, the Oratank are used for transporting clean petroleum products in Greenland.
The newly ordered ice-class tankers are expected to strengthen the company’s presence in northern markets. Based in Svendborg and managed by Lars Hjorth Simonsen, the son of founder Martin Hjorth Simonsen, the company conducts its commercial activities through its in-house chartering department.
This new order placed with Ada Shipyard once again highlights the competitive strength of Turkish shipyards in the construction of ice-class and special-purpose vessels.
