Swissport has begun ground handling and cargo operations for China Eastern Airlines at Melbourne International Airport, reports London's Air Cargo News.

Under the agreement, Swissport will provide passenger services, ramp handling, cargo operations, and aircraft cleaning. This partnership strengthens connectivity between Melbourne and Shanghai Pudong, one of Asia-Pacific's key aviation corridors.

Brad Moore, Swissport's Asia-Pacific chief executive, stated that the collaboration reflects China Eastern's trust in Swissport and builds on their existing partnership in Shanghai. He added that the companies have jointly developed a service model tailored for Chinese carriers.

China Eastern transports approximately 19,500 tonnes annually on the Shanghai-Melbourne route. The carrier operates up to 14 weekly flights during the low season, increasing to 17 in peak months, with additional services to Nanjing and Xi'an.

Melbourne serves as a key gateway for Australian exports, including fresh produce, seafood, and pharmaceuticals, while also supporting the growing e-commerce imports from China. Swissport's cargo operation includes cold-chain and pharmaceutical handling facilities.

This partnership follows Swissport's expansion in the Asia-Pacific region, including its agreement to manage and operate the new Digital & Intelligent International Cargo Terminal at Shanghai Pudong in collaboration with SMARGO, a joint venture between AVINEX Logistics and China Eastern Airlines Logistics.
