THE costs of 'sustainable' fuels is making nuclear-powered vessels more attractive in the quest to decarbonise shipping, according to experts, reports New York's Journal of Commerce. 'Green fuels are a poor substitute for heavy fuel oil and will drive up energy prices in the 2030s, getting people doing things they wouldn't dream of doing today, and that will change the economic framework of the business,' said economist Martin Stopford.
Producing and supplying fuels such as liquefied natural gas (LNG), hydrogen, ammonia and green methanol on the scale required to power global maritime shipping will push the industry into a 'new cost era', he said in a keynote address at the Core Power conference in London.
