SANMAR Shipyards and Med Tugs sign a €21 million deal for two advanced tugboats, set for delivery in 2026 and 2027 at Piraeus Port.
SANMAR Shipyards and Med Tugs have signed a strategic agreement for the construction and delivery of two advanced technology tugboats. The project, carried out through the SVS company established in partnership with Vernicos Scafi, Spanopoulos, and Lyboussakis, stands out as a significant investment in Greek maritime infrastructure.
To be deployed at the Port of Piraeus, under the contract valued at a total of 21 million euros, the delivery of the constructed tugboats is planned for September 2026 and September 2027. These tugboats will operate at the Port of Piraeus, one of the busiest ports in Europe. The vessels are designed to provide high performance in port maneuvers and escort operations.
The order includes two different models from the RAstar series, specially designed for SANMAR by the Canada-based Robert Allan Ltd.: the RAstar 2900SX with a towing capacity of 80 tons and the RAstar 3200SX with a towing capacity of 90 tons.
Both tugboats are equipped with a priority on crew safety and operational stability. The vessels are powered by twin CAT 3516E main engines compliant with IMO Tier III emission standards and feature an escort class main winch, stern winch, towing pin, deck winch, and FiFi 1 firefighting system.
These high-towing-capacity tugboats will assist in the safe port operations of ultra-large container ships and tankers. The project is considered a significant part of the SVS partnership's goal to modernize the Mediterranean fleet.
Ali Gürün, Vice President and CEO of SANMAR Shipyards, stated regarding the project, 'By carefully analyzing customer needs, we identified two different hull and engine configurations. We are proud to deliver two of our most capable tugboats to our neighbors.'
Dimitris Vernicos, President of Vernicos Scafi, expressed, 'These tugboats are not just machines; they are a reflection of our passion for excellence and our vision for safe shipping in the Mediterranean.'
This contract once again showcases SANMAR's competence in the production of high-performance and custom-designed tugboats, while also reinforcing the company's strong position during its 50th anniversary celebration.
