Tung Chee-hwa, a pivotal figure in Hong Kong's shipping and governance, died peacefully at 89, OOCL announced on September 8, 2026.

Tung Chee-hwa, the former chairman of Orient Overseas (International) Limited (OOIL) and the first Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, died peacefully on 8 September 2026 at the age of 89, the shipping company OOCL announced.

In a statement, OOCL said colleagues across its worldwide operations were 'deeply saddened' by his passing and extended their 'profound respect and deepest condolences.'

Tung was a central figure in the modern development of both the Hong Kong shipping industry and the city's post-handover government. According to OOCL, he studied marine engineering early in his career before joining the family shipping business, where he helped expand its ocean shipping operations internationally.

He later led the company for fourteen years, a period the company said included a major restructuring amid severe financial and industry pressure. OOCL credited his leadership with restoring the company's foundations and guiding its growth into what it described as 'one of the world's leading transportation and logistics companies.'

The company also identified Tung as an early advocate for using information technology in shipping and said he advanced the development of OOCL's global container liner network at a time when digital tools were not yet common in the sector.

'To OOCL, Mr. Tung was not only a distinguished leader of extraordinary achievements, but also a revered guiding figure who helped steer the Company through challenging times,' the company said in its statement. 'His pioneering spirit and unwavering commitment will always be remembered and cherished by all at OOCL.'

Beyond the company, OOCL described Tung as a key figure in modernizing China's shipping industry, working with industry peers to deepen the integration of Chinese shipping into global trade.

Tung's public profile extended well beyond commerce. As the first Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, he took office during the early implementation of the 'One Country, Two Systems' framework that followed the territory's return to Chinese sovereignty in 1997. OOCL said he worked to strengthen Hong Kong's standing as an international maritime center during that period.

The company said the values Tung exemplified had become part of its identity and would continue to guide its future direction.

'Mr. Tung Chee-hwa will be remembered with the deepest respect and gratitude,' OOCL said. 'May he rest in peace.'
