As China's National Day Golden Week approaches, notable capacity shifts are emerging on Asia-Europe trade lanes.

According to the latest data from Sea-Intelligence, scheduled capacity on Asia-North Europe services during the four-week window surrounding the 2026 Golden Week is expected to reach approximately 1.5 million TEU, representing a year-on-year increase of 27% and standing some 60% above the average levels recorded during the same period in 2017-2019. During Golden Week itself and the week immediately following, planned capacity is projected to grow by 63% and 39% year-on-year respectively, with no blank sailings scheduled in either week.

However, this capacity increase does not stem entirely from carriers proactively deploying additional sailings. Congestion at Asian ports has caused delays to a number of vessels, and as schedules gradually normalise, delayed vessels may depart in close proximity to regularly scheduled services - producing a concentrated arrival and departure pattern. Data indicates that 12 double-sailings are expected on Asia-North Europe services during Golden Week and the week that follows. As a result, a portion of the apparent capacity increase reflects a temporary surge driven by the release of previously delayed vessels rather than a genuine expansion of service provision. The gradual resumption of Suez Canal routings by carriers may further unlock capacity that had previously been absorbed by extended Cape of Good Hope diversions.

During Golden Week, factory shutdowns or reduced operations across China typically weigh on export volumes. Should the backlog of delayed vessels at ports continue to be worked through while Golden Week simultaneously suppresses export demand, the market may face a scenario characterised by rising capacity against declining cargo volumes. Sea-Intelligence considers this dynamic likely to generate a period of supply-and-demand imbalance on the Asia-North Europe market following Golden Week, increasing the probability that carriers will implement ad hoc voyage adjustments. For shipments scheduled in mid-to-late October, Sea-Intelligence advises shippers to maintain heightened vigilance regarding schedule reliability, as the market may experience cargo rollovers, delays, and last-minute voyage cancellations.

Global container capacity continues to expand at scale. The latest analysis from BIMCO indicates that supply-side pressures in the global container shipping market are intensifying. As of 2026, the global container fleet has reached approximately 34 million TEU, with an orderbook exceeding 14 million TEU - equivalent to 42% of the existing fleet. BIMCO projects global container fleet capacity growth of approximately 4.6% in 2026, accelerating to approximately 9% in 2027. Should a greater number of vessels resume transit via the Suez Canal-Red Sea corridor while new vessel deliveries continue at pace, effective market capacity could increase further still. BIMCO accordingly concludes that the supply-demand balance in the container shipping market may deteriorate further in 2027.

Asia-North Europe services surrounding Golden Week are currently navigating the simultaneous convergence of several significant developments: the concentrated release of vessels following port congestion, shifting export volumes during the holiday period, and the partial resumption of Suez Canal transits on select trade lanes. When these factors are considered in combination, actual sailing schedules in mid-to-late October may deviate materially from current published plans. For shippers arranging cargo movements on Europe services in October, schedules as currently published remain subject to change as vessel backlogs are absorbed, routing decisions are revised, and market demand conditions evolve. On the evidence currently available, what the Europe trade lane market faces in the aftermath of Golden Week may extend well beyond a seasonal softening in cargo volumes - it may also encompass a period of schedule disruption driven by the concentrated release of accumulated capacity.
