Shanghai International Port Group reports a 6.2% rise in container throughput, driven by infrastructure projects and operational upgrades.
Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG) reported a 6.2 per cent rise in container throughput in the first half of 2026, supported by infrastructure projects and operational upgrades, reports the UK's Seatrade Maritime News.
SIPG handled 28.74 million TEU at its homeport, while total cargo throughput reached 304.78 million tonnes, up 2.7 per cent year on year. The company stated that refined management, efficient coordination, and cross-industry collaboration underpinned these results.
Shanghai Port set new records during the period, including a daily throughput of 187,312 TEU on 9 June, surpassing the previous high of 174,338 TEU recorded in October 2025. A single operational shift achieved 68,088 TEU, beating the former record of 64,423 TEU set in November 2023.
Two major terminal projects are advancing at full speed. The Xiaoyangshan North Container Terminal completed steel pipe pile construction 66 days ahead of schedule. This facility will serve as a strategic offshore extension of the Shanghai International Shipping Center.
Meanwhile, Phase II reconstruction of the Luojing Container Terminal is progressing steadily. Following its Phase I conversion from bulk to automated container operations, the second phase adopts intelligent and eco-friendly designs to improve inland and coastal cargo distribution.
SIPG stated that these projects will substantially boost Shanghai Port's long-term throughput capacity and resilience, reinforcing its role as the world's largest container port.
