Major Strike Actions Set to Disrupt Over 40 European and Mediterranean Ports

Strike actions coordinated by 'Ports in Action' will impact over 40 ports in Europe and the Mediterranean on 30 October, raising key labor concerns.

According to a recent report by the European port industry publication Ports Europe, the international union network 'Ports in Action' is coordinating strike actions and mobilization activities across ports in multiple European and Mediterranean countries on 30 October.

The primary demands center on opposition to the use of ports for weapons transportation, resistance to port militarization, concerns over the impact of automation on employment, and calls for improved wages and working conditions. Eight ports in Italy have already been confirmed on the strike list, and some unions are planning to extend action to road freight and related logistics sectors. As the date approaches, the practical arrangements and potential impact at affected ports have become a key concern for freight forwarding enterprises.

The action is being coordinated by a coalition of union organizations, including France's CGT Port and Dock Workers, Greece's ENEDEP, the Basque region's LAB, Turkey's Liman-Is, Morocco's ODT, and Italy's USB and ORSA Porti, among others. The unions state that participating organizations represent workers across more than 40 ports throughout Europe and the Mediterranean. On 30 October, actions—including strikes and demonstrations—will be carried out in accordance with local conditions, with the specific form of each action determined by the relevant local union.

On 15 October, the unions held a press conference in Rome to announce the eight Italian ports participating in the action: the ports of Ancona, Civitavecchia, Genoa, Gioia Tauro, Livorno, Ravenna, Salerno, and Trieste. These ports are distributed across different coastal regions of Italy and are involved in import and export transportation, container handling, and Mediterranean transshipment operations. Among them, the Port of Genoa serves as a key commercial hub, while the Port of Gioia Tauro performs a critical container transshipment function. Should terminal operations be disrupted by strike action, vessel berthing, container loading and unloading, and onward transportation arrangements may face delays.

Beyond Italy, unions are planning actions in France, Greece, the Basque region, Turkey, Morocco, and India, with specific participating ports and strike arrangements in some locations still being announced. The scope of impact may extend beyond port terminals. Italy's USB union has declared its support for expanded mobilization, encompassing logistics, freight transportation, and parts of the public transport sector. For international logistics chains—where port handling and road transportation are closely interlinked—disruption to terminal operations, truck haulage, or related port services could further affect container collection and return, cargo handover, and subsequent transshipment arrangements.

It should be noted that the specific scope, duration, and operational areas affected will vary by location, and actual impact should be assessed based on subsequent notifications from local unions, port authorities, and shipping lines.

For freight forwarding enterprises relying on European and Mediterranean port routes, it is advisable to verify in advance the actual arrangements for affected ports and voyages, monitor the latest notifications issued by local unions, port authorities, and shipping lines, and communicate proactively with clients regarding potential schedule delays and delivery risks, in order to mitigate operational disruption.
