A GENERAL Average and Salvage security has yet to be paid on one-third of the undamaged containers aboard the fire-damaged 7,510-TEU Yantian Express, according to Japanese-owned, Singapore-based Ocean Network Express (ONE). 'In order to assist progress of vessel operational proceedings and salvage company approval, we again encourage all cargo interests to immediately provide the requested General Average and Salvage security in order to allow the containers to be delivered,' ONE said in a customer advisory.
The Yantian Express, a Hapag-Lloyd vessel, was diverted to the Bahamas after fire on 3 January broke out while en route from Colombo to Halifax via Suez. All 23 crew were evacuated the following day with no reported injuries.
Repairs to the vessel which offloaded damaged cargoes in Freeport, Bahamas are nearing completion and its sailing date is now dependent on final Class approval and the fitting of hatch covers, reported Seatrade Maritime News of Colchester, Essex.
