Port Sudan processed 26,019 TEU in June as operations improved despite conflict, reported New Delhi's TrendNafrica.

The state-owned Sea Ports Corporation stated that the Southern Port handled 15,593 containers across 30 vessels, which included 15 container ships and 15 non-container vessels.

Imports accounted for 8,157 containers, or 13,615 TEU, representing 52.33 percent of the total. Exports, including both loaded and empty boxes, reached 7,436 containers, or 12,404 TEU, making up 47.67 percent.

Officials credited efficiency initiatives for sustaining foreign trade flows. They noted that these improvements have enhanced the capacity to handle larger vessels and support regional services.

The port welcomed its first ultra-large containerships in June, marking a significant milestone in its capabilities. Additionally, transshipment services resumed on June 16 after a prolonged suspension, positioning Port Sudan as a stronger hub in the Red Sea.

Authorities acknowledged that infrastructure constraints remain a challenge. They indicated that berth capacity and harbor depth must be expanded to accommodate rising traffic. Current facilities include 1,478 meters of berth length and 1.48 million square meters of storage, which are below international standards.
