ClassNK initiates a pilot test with ten firms for the NK-PASS system, set to enhance shipbuilding approvals using 3D models by spring 2026.

Tokyo — The Japanese classification society ClassNK has announced the launch of a joint pilot test involving ten Japanese companies for the NK-PASS drawing approval system, which is compatible with 3DMBA (3D Model-Based Approval), scheduled to be officially implemented in the spring of 2026.

3DMBA is an approach that envisions the approval processes to be conducted based on three-dimensional (3D) models instead of traditional two-dimensional (2D) technical drawings, and it is becoming increasingly widespread worldwide. By utilizing 3D models, the aim is to visualize and enhance the accuracy of information that is difficult to detect with classical methods, as well as to identify potential errors more quickly through design changes.

The new systems developed by ClassNK are designed to support the transition from the existing 2D drawing-based approval process to a new workflow centered around 3D models. The systems specifically aim to contribute to the digital transformation in the shipbuilding industry by supporting the international standard OCX (Open Class 3D Exchange) format.

    Scope of the Pilot Test

The companies participating in the pilot test, listed in alphabetical order in Japanese, are: Oshima Shipbuilding, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Shin Kurushima Sanoyas Shipbuilding, Shin Kurushima Dockyard, Tsuneishi Solutions Tokyobay, Tsuneishi Shipbuilding, Hakodate Dock, Namura Shipbuilding, Nippon Shipyard, and Mitsubishi Shipbuilding.

The study, conducted in collaboration with these ten companies, aims to:

    - Verify the functionalities compatible with 3DMBA,
    - Test data interoperability using the OCX format,
    - Validate practical operations where 3D models are used alongside supporting 2D drawings as needed during the transition process.

Through the pilot test, ClassNK plans to identify the operational advantages and challenges of 3DMBA and to refine the system ahead of its official launch in the spring of 2026.

A Guide Will Also Be Published

With the implementation of the system, the organization plans to publish a document provisionally titled “3D Model-Based Approval (3DMBA) Guide.” The guide is expected to include:

    - Requirements for 3D model presentations,
    - Standard operating procedures related to the approval process,
    - Processing of OCX-based 3D models.

It has been stated that feedback obtained from the pilot test will be reflected in the guide content to support the effective implementation of 3DMBA.

    *1 NK-PASS:
It is a drawing approval management system offered by ClassNK. Traditionally used for 2D drawing approvals, it will be equipped with functionalities supporting 3DMBA with its update in the spring of 2026 and will enable the execution of approval processes using OCX-based 3D models.

    *2 ClassNK 3DViewer:
It is a 3D viewer being developed by ClassNK, designed to visualize OCX-based 3D models. It is intended for use in 3D model-centered workflows, including the framework of 3DMBA, and supports the broader utilization of digital data.

*3 Open Class 3D Exchange (OCX) format:
It is a type of file format developed to enable seamless digital workflows between shipyards and classification societies, containing 3D model data and design specifications. It is a 3D digital protocol applicable to the design approval process of ships; standardization efforts are being advanced within a consortium comprising classification societies, 3D software providers, designers, and relevant stakeholders.
