THE Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) posted a 6

THE Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) posted a 6.8 per cent year-on-year increase in first half container throughput to 3.45 million TEU. 'A primary factor driving the cargo increase is Bayonne Bridge project that raised the clearance under the bridge from 151 feet to 215 feet, allowing 18,000-TEU ships to pass under it. Previously, the maximum was 9,800 TEU,' said PANYNJ.

The volume increase was fuelled by a 7.8 per cent hike in laden containers, carrying commodities such as furniture, appliances and beverages, reported American Shipper. Laden export boxes were also up 9.2 per cent, though there were fewer inbound empties.

In June, total container volumes were 625,366 TEU, up seven per cent from June 2016.

During the first half, ExpressRail, the port authority's on-dock intermodal rail facilities, handled 315,011 lifts, up 15 per cent and a trend expected to grow with the opening of ExpressRail Port Jersey at the end of this year.

The port also handled 281,224 vehicles in the first half, a 6.2 per cent increase. This is part of a programme launched in 2014 to provide financial incentives to automakers to bring cars through New York-New Jersey.
