Oruç Reis starts route research for the Türkiye-TRNC natural gas line

Türkiye has published NAVTEX for the 101-kilometer subsea natural gas pipeline planned to be established between Anamur and Teknecik region in TRNC. Oruç Reis research ship will conduct marine research on the planned line route until August 30.

Turkey has published NAVTEX in the Eastern Mediterranean for route research of the subsea pipeline planned to deliver natural gas to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. The Oruç Reis seismic research vessel is expected to operate along the planned line until August 30.

The agreement regarding the project was signed between Türkiye and TRNC on July 10. According to the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, the line will start from Mersin's Anamur district and reach the Teknecik region in the east of Kyrenia in TRNC. The total length of the project will be approximately 101 kilometers; 97 kilometers of it will be under sea and 4 kilometers will be on land.

In the Ministry's statement, it was stated that two 22-inch diameter pipelines are planned on the route and that the system will be designed to operate in two directions. In the first stage, it is aimed to transport natural gas from Turkey to TRNC and to use the gas especially in electricity production.

The bidirectional design aims to provide the technical opportunity to transport gas originating from the TRNC or the Eastern Mediterranean to Turkey and from there to the European system in the future. However, since there is no announced production area, definitive gas volume or binding sales contract for Europe at this stage, the section in question should be considered as a long-term design opportunity.

It is expected that the studies carried out by Oruç Reis will contribute to the determination of the structure of the seabed, water depth, slopes on the route, geological risks and factors that may prevent the placement of the pipeline. Publication of NAVTEX does not mean that pipe laying activity has started. This stage is in the nature of route research and engineering preparation.

Likewise, NAVTEX is not a legal document that determines maritime jurisdiction boundaries or creates construction rights on its own. It is a maritime notice informing navigating ships about research activity in a particular area.

The project's tender method, pipe manufacturer, laying vessel, financing model, environmental impact process and exact commissioning date have not yet been disclosed in full detail. There is still time for the ribbon; Engineering under the sea often progresses more slowly than conversations on land.
