Oman Air is enhancing cargo operations by seeking freighter partnerships and expanding its trucking network, aiming to connect Asia, Africa, and Europe.
Oman Air is seeking freighter partnerships and expanding its trucking network as part of plans to grow cargo operations, reported London's Air Cargo News.
Head of cargo Mike Duggan stated that the airline is in talks with freighter operators to develop services linking Asia, Africa, and Europe through Muscat. These partnerships would go beyond block space agreements, involving joint work on routing and scheduling.
Mr. Duggan noted strong demand from Asia into Africa and established flows from Asia into Europe. He mentioned that perishable exports from Africa to Europe, the Middle East, and Asia could also be channeled through Muscat. The partnerships would support bellyhold operations and could pave the way for Oman Air to launch its own widebody freighter fleet.
The airline has also introduced a road feeder service between Muscat and Dubai, moving more than 200 tonnes in June. Mr. Duggan indicated that the trucking operation has been successful and offers shippers more options, with plans to expand to Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia, although customs and border processes remain challenges.
Mr. Duggan expressed confidence in the cargo market outlook, although recovery depends on passenger traffic. He noted that Oman's open airspace during regional conflict has strengthened its case as a transshipment hub.
Looking ahead, he cited concerns over inflation, fuel prices, the Red Sea situation, and supply chain risk management. He emphasized that shippers and carriers must adapt to shifting conditions while Oman Air positions Muscat as a strategic hub.
