Lloyd’s Register and A.P. Moller–Maersk partner to assess nuclear container shipping between Charleston and Felixstowe ports.
Lloyd’s Register, A.P. Moller–Maersk, the Port of Charleston in the USA, and the Port of Felixstowe in the UK have formed a partnership for the 'Pink Corridor' project. According to Lloyd’s Register's announcement dated September 2, 2026, the study aims to determine the operational and safety requirements for a nuclear-powered container ship that is expected to operate between the two ports.
Port access and insurance conditions will be examined.
Within the scope of the project, ship safety, nuclear security measures, cyber resilience, and emergency response processes will be addressed. The compliance of insurance regulations with maritime and nuclear energy legislation will also be evaluated.
The study will investigate the conditions necessary for a conceptual vessel's access to the ports of Charleston and Felixstowe.
Building on previous research.
The partnership is based on the regulatory assessment conducted by Lloyd’s Register and CORE POWER in 2024. This study had transformed into a joint development project regarding the use of nuclear energy in container shipping with Maersk's participation.
The results obtained in the first phase of the Pink Corridor will determine the scope of a potential second phase. Issues requiring further research in engineering, legislation, and safety will be identified. The project is still in the research phase.
