Mission to Seafarers launches a Happiness Index for maritime professionals on land, measuring well-being through a 10-question survey.
Mission to Seafarers is launching the first happiness index aimed at maritime professionals working on land, extending welfare measurement efforts beyond the ship's deck.
Welfare will be measured with a 10-question survey.
The new 'Happiness Index for Land-Based Workers' is based on the methodology of the Seafarers Happiness Index, which the organization has been tracking for nearly a decade.
As part of the index, a 10-question survey will be conducted for employees in the fields of ship management, port operations, maritime law, insurance, logistics, finance, and technology, using a scale from 1 to 10.
Objective: Highlighting the difference between sea and land.
The initiative aims to create the first comprehensive picture of welfare in the maritime ecosystem. It also seeks to enable direct comparisons between those working at sea and on land, as well as to gather data on workplace culture and employee engagement.
The data obtained is expected to contribute to the development of welfare policies and the retention of employees.
'Welfare must be understood together on both sides.'
Steven Jones, the founder of the indices, emphasized that the welfare of seafarers cannot be evaluated in isolation.
'We have been measuring happiness at sea for years. It is now time to measure the welfare of those on land who make decisions that shape life on board,' he stated.
'Evidence-based improvement is the goal.'
The organization's program director, Ben Bailey, noted that the new index will strengthen the data-driven approach in the sector.
Bailey said, 'This step will allow us to identify which changes will have the greatest impact by bringing together both sides of the industry.'
The survey will be anonymous.
It has been reported that the survey will be conducted anonymously and will be built upon the existing index infrastructure.
The results are expected to be evaluated over time alongside data from those working at sea, providing a comprehensive analysis of workplace and organizational culture in the global maritime sector.
